Since I’ve started creating YouTube videos, I’ve been aiming to improve my overall video quality and viewer engagement with better editing and motion graphics. I used to do motion graphics for a living and it’s something I really enjoy!

I recently ran into this video, which offers some great editing tips for engagement:

In that video’s description, there’s a link to another video that covers the top 5 video editing applications. I watched that to see if they covered any free tools and if VSDC, which I’ve been using recently, made the cut. VSDC wasn’t mentioned, but they did bring up an editor that I had never heard of, Davinci Resolve.

Production Grade Tools

I’m a huge fan of free, or open-source tools. Especially if using them results in skills and experience you can you can convert into a career!

Turns out Davinci Resolve is a popular tool used in many major Hollywood blockbusters they offer 90% of their features for free!

Plus, it has a powerful motion graphics solution, called Fusion, that handles both 2D and 3D node-based workflows. It seems like you can creat anything you can imagine, including particle effects! 🥰

My New Editor

With Davinci Resolve being a cross between Adobe’s Premier Pro (editing) and After Effects (motion graphics), I’ll be shifting to this as my new editor of choice.

Here’s a video that covers the basics and demonstrates how intuitive the UI is:

Since I only plan to do B-role footage style videos, which include lots of screen captures, I want to be able to jazz them up a bit to make them more engaging. This video teaches some techniques that mimic what I saw in the first video of this article, which I thought were cool:

There are literally TONS of tutorials out there that teach you how to do some incredibly cool things with your videos using Davinci Resolve.

Get Ready!

With my professional background and passion in multimedia and animation, I’m likely to spend a good chunk of time becoming fluent in Davinci Resolve. Especially since it’s likely to offer time saving solutions that I can leverage to streamline my video production process for sharing my tech projects with the world.

Keep an eye out for some of the cool new tricks used in future videos!

I may even post videos tutorials, or shorts to share techniques that I feel may be useful to others.

I’m made a video, which walks through the installation and introduces Davinci Resolve using some new techniques that I’m learning 😉

Here’s a static sneak peak of me making the “behind the scenes” portion of the video:
